Why It Matters
The primary instrument through which Ravi Shankar introduced Hindustani classical music to the Western world — performed at Monterey Pop Festival 1967, Woodstock 1969, and the Concert for Bangladesh 1971. Shankar's playing influenced the Beatles (George Harrison studied under him), Philip Glass, and an entire generation of world music crossover artists.
Description
A full-size sitar built in the North Indian style — gourd body, 20 metal frets, 6–7 main strings and 13 sympathetic strings beneath. Played with a wire plectrum (mizrab) worn on the right index finger.
